We’re rounding out the week here at The Bits with a few more new disc reviews, and some release news as well, including word of new 4K catalog titles, and updates on a title or two that we’ve talked about here previously in recent weeks. But first those reviews...

I’ve posted my thoughts on Wim Wenders’ stunning Wings of Desire (1987) which is now available in 4K Ultra HD from Curzon Film in the UK. The 4K remaster, which was done by the Wim Wenders Foundation, is absolutely stunning. Fans of the film may not realize this, but by the time the film was completed and being shown in theaters back in ‘87, the version we all experienced then was fully six generations away from original camera negative. But now, every inch of this film—save for the little bit of historical and newsreel footage that appears within it—is first-generation right off the negative. And it makes a huge difference, even over the previous Criterion Blu-ray. So if you’re a fan, this 4K release is definitely worth a look.

I’ve also reviewed Jack Ryan: Season Two on 4K Ultra HD, which was released last month on the format by Paramount (along with Season One which we’ve reviewed here). Season Three of the series recently dropped on Amazon Prime and we have word that it’s coming to both Blu-ray and 4K as well later this year.

Also today, Stephen has turned in his thoughts on Adam Rifkin’s The Invisible Maniac on 4K Ultra HD from Vinegar Syndrome.

And we have more reviews on the way as well. I’m personally working on Shout! Factory’s recent WarGames and HBO’s House of the Dragon: Season One, both in 4K Ultra HD. I hope to post those reviews over the weekend or early next week. And the rest of the review team is working on new titles as well, so be sure to watch for them. [Read on here...]

Now then... I promised you a little bit of 4K Ultra HD catalog news, as well as updates on 4K catalog titles that we’ve mentioned previously. So here we go...

Our retail sources are now telling us to expect Warner Bros. Home Entertainment to release John Huston’s The Maltese Falcon (1941) and Stuart Rosenberg’s Cool Hand Luke (1967) on 4K UHD on 4/11, followed by Nicholas Ray’s Rebel Without a Cause (1955) on 4/25.

We’ve also recently learned that Martin Scorsese’s The Departed (2006) and Harold Ramis’ National Lampoon’s Vacation (1983) are coming to 4K Ultra HD later this year from Warner. Street date on those is TBA.

Finally today, we first reported that James Cameron’s Titanic (1997) would likely be released on 4K Ultra HD by Paramount in 2023 back on 12/19 (see our post here) and we followed it up on 12/27 (with a second update here) with direct confirmation from our sources that a 4K release was indeed coming. There have since been rumors circulating online that while Paramount would be releasing the 4K UHD here in North America, Disney had no plans to release the film in 4K internationally. Well, I’ve personally checked in with my industry sources and have been told that this is not the case—Disney’s international operations will have the option to release the film in 4K UHD in each market they serve around the world. What’s more, I’m told that if James Cameron wants the film to be released in 4K internationally, you can bet that Disney will find a way make it happen. Keep in mind that nothing has yet been officially announced, but our sources do indicate that Titanic is coming to 4K in 2023. We will of course post more information as soon as we have it.

We’ve updated our 4K Ultra HD Release List here at The Bits with all of this information accordingly.

All right, we’ll leave you with a look at the cover art for The Fabelmans and KLSC’s new 12 Angry Men 4K release, all of which are now available for pre-order on Amazon by clicking on the images...
