The Fate of Warner Bros, or Why Netflix May Be the Studio’s Least Bad Option
All right, as you might expect based on the title of this column, I have a few things to say today here at The Digital Bits. But we’ve got a little bit of regular site business to take care of this morning before we get to that.
First, we have a number of new and recent disc reviews for you all to enjoy, including…
Stephen’s take on Greg McLean’s Wolf Creek (2005) in 4K Ultra HD from Imprint, Richard Stanley’s Dust Devil (1992) in 4K UHD from Kino Lorber Studio Classics, Emma Tammi’s Five Nights at Freddy’s (2023) in a limited edition 4K box set from Blumhouse and Universal, and Howard Hawks’ His Girl Friday (1940) in 4K UHD from Criterion.
Tim’s look at The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004) in 4K Ultra HD from Criterion’s The Wes Anderson Archive.
Dennis’ thoughts on Ruggero Deodato’s The Barbarians (1987) on Blu-ray from Kino Lorber Studio Classics, as well as Mike Nichols’ Carnal Knowledge (1971) in 4K UHD from Criterion, and W.S. Van Dyke’s Manhattan Melodrama (1934) on Blu-ray from the Warner Archive Collection.
And finally, Stuart has a few words to about the Warner Archive Collection’s new Joan Crawford Collection on Blu-ray, which includes Grand Hotel (1932), The Women (1939), Possessed (1939), and The Damned Don’t Cry (1950).
Also today, our own Russell Hammond has just shared our newest update of the Release Dates & Cover Art section here at The Bits with all the latest Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K UHD cover artwork and Amazon.com pre-order links. As always, whenever you order literally anything from Amazon after clicking to them through one of our links first (like this one), you’re helping to support our work here at the site and we greatly appreciate it. Criterion’s September slate includes High and Low, This Is Spinal Tap & Flow in 4K, plus Lois & Clark on Blu-ray & more!
We’re starting the week here at The Bits with more new disc reviews and some great announcement news as well!
But first, I just wanted to let you all know that we’ve stabilized the website to address some software and loading issues that we’ve been experiencing recently. We’re not 100% back to normal, but the site should at least be loading faster now than it was before. We’ll be doing some additional upgrades in the week ahead, so more on that topic soon.
In the meantime, we’ve shared a bunch of great new disc reviews here on the site today and over the weekend. Among them are…
My review (with longtime Bits contributor Adam Jahnke) of William Friedkin’s Sorcerer (1977) in 4K Ultra HD from the Criterion Collection! The disc streets on 6/24, and the A/V quality is superb.
I’ve also reviewed the new UFO: The Complete SHADO Files Blu-ray box set from our friends at Imprint Television, which contains the best HD quality of any Blu-ray release of Gerry Anderson’s UFO (1970-71) to date, along with the most complete collection of special features.
Also new today is Dennis’ look at Jaume Collet-Serra’s The Woman in the Yard (2025) on Blu-ray from Blumhouse and Universal Pictures Home Entertainment.
And Stephen has taken an in-depth look at Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett’s Abigail (2024) in 4K Ultra HD from Universal via Scream Factory.
More new disc reviews are definitely on the way all this week, so be sure to watch out for them! [Read on here...]

Second Sight bows The Hitcher in 4K Ultra HD at last, plus Watchmen: Chapter I, Caligula: Ultimate Cut, Stardust, Downfall, Bewitched: The Complete Series on Blu-ray & more
We’ve got more interesting release news here today to close out the week, and a few more new disc reviews as well. First the reviews...
Stephen has turned in his thoughts on Abel Ferrara’s Dangerous Game (1993) on Blu-ray from Vinegar Syndrome via their fine new Cinématographe line.
And Dennis has reviewed Bryce McGuire’s Night Swim (2024) on Blu-ray from Blumhouse via Universal, as well as Raoul Walsh’s The Man I Love (1947) on Blu-ray from the Warner Archive Collection.
More reviews are on the way for next week, including my take on Hayao Miyazaki’s animated The Boy and the Huron (2023) in 4K Ultra HD from GKids. So be sure to stay tuned for them.
Also, my apologies for the lack of news updates this week, but I was struck a bout of vertigo last Saturday, and I’ve been having to take it a bit easy to reset everything back to normal. It’s nothing serious—mine is caused by tension in my shoulders aggravating the nerves in my neck, in this case triggered by sleeping with my neck in an awkward position. So the key is to fix my pillow situation and try to relax a little bit more. I’m sure some of you out there can relate!
Anyway, the big news lately is that Second Sight in the UK has finally set their long-awaited 4K remaster of Robert Harmon’s The Hitcher (1986) for release on both 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray on 9/30. It’s currently exclusive to their website in a 4K + Blu-ray Limited Edition, as well as separate (and standard) 4K UHD and Blu-ray editions. [Read on here...]

Oppenheimer, Titanic, The Exorcist: Believer, Scarlet Street, Shane, Netflix’s Wednesday, Darkman & much more!
This is going to be a big week in terms of new disc reviews! Just today we’ve got...
My take on Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer (2023) in 4K Ultra HD from Universal, which in my opinion is the A/V demo disc of the year, not to mention a terrific special edition release. Unfortunately, it’s selling out everywhere, but we strongly suspect that Universal is already replicating more copies (and we’ve asked for official confirmation of that, which we’ll share here as soon as we hear back).
Tim’s reviews of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie (2023) in 4K Ultra HD from Warner Bros and Jeannot Szwarc’s Santa Claus: The Movie (1985) in 4K UHD from StudioCanal in the UK.
Stuart’s look at the Audie Murphy Collection III box set from Kino Lorber Studio Classics, which includes Hell Bent for Leather (1960), Posse from Hell (1961), and Showdown (1963) on Blu-ray.
And Dennis’ thoughts on Brad Watson’s The Siege (2023) on Blu-ray from Well Go USA Entertainment, as well as Harry Beaumont’s Dance, Fools, Dance (1931) on Blu-ray from the Warner Archive Collection.
I’m also hard at work on my 4K review of James Cameron’s Titanic (1997) from Paramount and we have several more Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD reviews cooking at the moment. I would expect James Mangold’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny to show up at any time for review in 4K as well. So be sure to keep your eyes peeled for them. [Read on here...]

Coppola’s The Outsiders is official for 4K, plus Forever Purge, Severin’s terrific All the Haunts Be Ours box & RIP Charlie Watts
We’ve got some good announcement news to report today...
As we first revealed a couple weeks ago here at The Bits, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment, StudioCanal, and American Zoetrope have just officially announced their new 4K restoration Francis Ford Coppola’s The Outsiders: The Complete Novel. From their joint press release: “Created to give fans more of the action that took place in S.E. Hinton’s celebrated book, Coppola’s latest, definitive version includes new music, as well as several scenes cut from the theatrical version which were reconstructed from original camera negatives.”
Warner will re-release the film in a limited theatrical run starting on 9/26, with a physical 4K Ultra HD Collector’s Edition (that will include both The Complete Novel and the original version) and a Digital release expected on 11/9. StudioCanal will handle a similar 4K UHD and Blu-ray release internationally on 11/8. The Outsiders: The Complete Novel will also appear on HBO Max starting on 11/16. You can see the poster art for the theatrical re-release at the left (4K UHD cover art is not available yet).
Warner’s physical 4K Ultra HD release will be a 4-disc set that includes both The Outsiders: The Complete Novel and The Outsiders in 4K with HDR (likely HDR10). You’ll also get Digital codes for both versions, and substantial new and legacy extras. The new extras will include a restoration interview (with cinematographer Stephen Burum, Zoetrope Head of Archives and Restorations James Mockoski, and colourist Gregg Garvin), plus deleted scenes, an introduction by Coppola, and 2 new featurettes (Anatomy of a Scene and Old House New Home). Second Sight details Romero’s Dawn of the Dead in 4K, plus Urban Cowboy & Flashdance BDs & Rad in 4K
Well, last night I finished the Star Wars—all 11 films in 4K. Pretty good, I have to say. I guess the thing I was most surprised by, now that we know it’s a larger narrative—and that some of the films are admittedly better than others—is that it all works together so well. The larger narrative does fit together pretty nicely. Admittedly, the sequel films feel a little more distant from the original trilogy than the prequels do, but visually and tonally they’re actually closer in spirit. Anyway, it’s an interesting experience and one I’m glad I waited for 4K to have. The films have never looked or sounded better, imperfect though some of them are.
All right, let’s have a news post, shall we?
First up here today, Tim has just turned in a review of Richard Stanley’s Color Out of Space on 4K Ultra HD from RLJ Entertainment. It’s an interesting film (and a solid disc) that’s worth a look. You’ll find that here. [Read on here...]
