First up, Lionsgate has officially set Roland Emmerich’s Midway for release on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on 2/18, with the Digital release expected on 2/4. The 4K disc will include both Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos audio. Extras on the Blu-ray versions will include audio commentary with Emmerich, 6 featurettes (Getting It Right: The Making of Midway, The Men of Midway, Roland Emmerich: Man on a Mission, Turning Point: The Legacy of Midway, Joe Rochefort: Breaking the Japanese Code, and We Met at Midway: Two Survivors Remember), and the film’s theatrical trailer. You can see the cover artwork above left and also below.
Lionsgate (with A24) has also set Waves for release on Blu-ray and DVD on 2/4, with the Digital release due on 1/21. Extras will include audio commentary with writer/director Trey Edward Shults and actor Kelvin Harrison, Jr., the Creating Waves: The Truth in It All featurette, a Q&A with Director and Cast, and deleted scenes.
Lionsgate will also release Norm of the North: Family Vacation on DVD and Digital on 2/25, along with the V.C. Andrews’ Casteel Family 5 Movie Series on DVD only that same day (including Heaven, Dark Angel, Fallen Hearts, Gates of Paradise, and Web of Dreams).
HBO has announced that His Dark Materials: The Complete First Season is now available on Digital. They’ve also confirmed that a Blu-ray and DVD release is forthcoming in 2020.
Arrow Films is releasing A Serial Killer’s Guide to Life on Digital on 1/13. There is no word yet of a physical release.
For UK readers, Eureka! is releasing King Hu’s Raining in the Mountain as a dual format Blu-ray and DVD Masters of Cinema edition on February 24. It will be limited to 2000 copies.
RLJ Entertainment has confirmed that it’s February slat will include Keeping Faith: Series 2 on Blu-ray and DVD along with Mon Mon Mon Monsters on Blu-ray and DVD on 2/4. Following on 2/18 is The Good Karma Hospital: Series 3 on Blu-ray and DVD. And Color Out of Space will officially be released on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on 2/25.
Speaking of RLJ Entertainment, it appears that they’ll be releasing VFW on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on 3/31.
And Kino Lorber Studio Classics has set Jack Arnold’s Man in the Shadow (1957), Andrew V. McLaglen’s The Rare Breed (1966), and Jacques Tourneur’s Canyon Passage (1946), and James Neilson’s Night Passage (1957) for release on Blu-ray on 3/10.
We also have a couple of unofficial street date updates for you from our 4K Ultra HD Release List (via our studio and industry sources): Look for Sony’s A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood to arrive on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on 2/18. Sony will also be releasing Charlie’s Angels (2019) on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K on 3/10.
Now then... International CES 2020 starts tomorrow in Las Vegas. And we have a bit of news for you related to the 4K Ultra HD format and Filmmaker Mode. Both LG and Vizio are showing their support of the UHD Alliance’s Filmmaker Mode initiative—both companies will include it in their 2020 UHD display line-ups. As you may recall, LG, Panasonic, and Vizio all confirmed their support back in August at the official launch event (see our reporting on that here). The good news is that luxury home cinema provider Kaleidescape has now announced their intention to support it too. And the really good news is that both Samsung and Philips have now (at CES 2020) announced their intention to support Filmmaker Mode as well. Of the major display brands, that just leaves Sony, TCL, Hisense, and Skyworth as yet uncommitted.
