We’ve got two new disc reviews for you on this lovely Tuesday afternoon, both of them by our own Stephen Bjork...

First up, he’s taken a look at Universal’s CG-animated prequel Minions: The Rise of Gru in 4K Ultra HD.

Stephen has also offered his thoughts on Fernando Di Leo’s The Violent Breed (1984) on Blu-ray from Code Red via Kino Lorber.

As mentioned yesterday, more new disc reviews are on the way including a few great new 4K catalog titles, among them The War of the Worlds from Paramount and The Lost Boys from Warner Bros. So watch for those and more in the coming days.

Now then, in announcement news, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has officially set David Leitch’s Bullet Train (2022) for release on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on 10/18, with the Digital release expected on 9/27. [Read on here...]

All right, I’m finally feeling better after my recent brush with an allergic reaction, so I’ve got a good My Two Cents update for you all today with some exciting 4K UHD release news and more new disc reviews as well.

First up is Stephen’s look at Joe Dante’s The Howling, now available in a new 40th anniversary release in 4K Ultra HD from Studio Canal in the UK. The 4K disc in the package will work on any UHD player, but the Blu-ray is Region B only and the DVD is Region 2 only.

Also today, Stephen has taken a look at Anthony Mann’s The Naked Spur (1953) on Blu-ray from MGM via the Warner Archive Collection.

And Tim has reviewed Camillo Mastrocinque’s An Angel for Satan (1966) on Blu-ray from Severin Films, as well as Don Siegel’s Coogan’s Bluff (1968) on Blu-ray from Kino Lorber Studio Classics. [Read on here...]

We’re closing out the week here at The Digital Bits today with another new disc review and a little bit more release news as well...

First up, I’ve given M. Night Shyamalan’s Unbreakable (2000) a look in 4K Ultra HD from Disney. This was an early Vista Series DVD title that eventually found its way to Blu-ray in 2008. But the good news is that not only has the film gotten a terrific 4K remaster for UHD, the Blu-ray in the package is remastered as well. And both are a major improvement over any previous release. I think fans of the film will be pleased with this one.

As always, lots more new disc reviews are cooking for next week, so be sure to keep your eyes peeled for them.

Now then... in announcement news today, our friends at Arrow Video have just revealed their December release slate, which includes the previously announced Shawscope: Volume One Blu-ray box set along with My Stepmother Is an Alien on Blu-ray in the US, UK, and Canada, as well as The Last Matinee and the Rainer Werner Fassbinder Collection: Volume II (includes Fear Eats the Soul, Effi Briest, Fox and His Friends & Chinese Roulette, and The Marriage of Maria Braun) on Blu-ray in the UK only, and the Giallo Essentials Collection (includes What Have They Done to Your Daughters?, Torso, and Strip Nude for Your Killer) on Blu-ray in the US and Canada only. The street date for all seems to be 12/7, save for Shawscope: Volume One and My Stepmother Is an Alien, which appear to be due on or about 12/14. We’re starting things off with another new Blu-ray review here at The Bits today: Tim has offered his thoughts on Jack Hill’s Switchblade Sisters (1975), as soon-to-be-released on the format by our friends at Arrow Video. You’ll find that here.

In announcement news today, the big update is that StudoCanal has finally revealed that their Basic Instinct 4K Ultra HD release will happen in the UK on 6/14. There’s a deluxe edition coming to Amazon UK (click here for that) and an exclusive Steelbook edition coming to Zavvi (click here for the US pre-order link and here for the UK link).

Extras on the 4K disc itself will include audio commentary with Camille Paglia, a second commentary with Paul Verhoeven and Jan de Bont, 4 featurettes (Basic Instinct: Sex, Death and Stone, An Unending Story: Scoring Basic Instinct, Blonde Poison: The Making of Basic Instinct, and Cast & Crew Interviews), 3 Storyboard Comparisons (for the Love Scene, Car Chase, and Elevator Murder), and Screen Tests (4 for Sharon Stone and 1 for Jeanne Tripplehorn). The 4K package will also include a 2-disc Blu-ray edition with the same extras. [Read on here...]

Well... it’s Friday. And thank goodness. I don’t know about you, but this week has been trying. On top of everything else, we’ve had 90 and 100 degree heat here in SoCal with like 80% humidity. Human beings weren’t designed for that kind of sticky.

I am working on my review of Pitch Black in 4K Ultra HD from Arrow Video. I hope to have it up soon, but at the very latest it will be up on Monday. There’s a lot of extras and I’m going back to look at the past Blu-ray and DVD versions to compare. I will say that the 4K remaster is beautiful and it really holds up. There’s tons of detail and the HDR grade is subtle but really adds to the film’s striking cinematography and overall look. The disc is also loaded—it appears that virtually everything from past releases as carried over, plus there’s new content too.

Meanwhile, we do have one new disc review here: Dennis has reviewed Sebastian Munoz’ The Price, new on Blu-ray from Artsploitation Films. You’ll find that here.

And I believe Tim is working his way through Arrow’s new Gamera: The Complete Collection Blu-ray set, which is a mighty beast. So he’ll have a look for you at that as well sometime soon. [Read on here...]

Tim has just posted a review of Pierre B. Reinhard’s Revenge of the Living Dead Girls (1987) on Blu-ray from Severin Films.

And Dennis has turned in his thoughts on Budd Boetticher’s World War II drama The Red Ball Express (1952), now available on Blu-ray from Kino Lorber Studio Classics.

Also, I’ve just gotten my hands on Arrow Video’s new Pitch Black 4K Ultra HD, so I’m going to have a review of that up by Friday.

But tomorrow is likely to be an interesting news day, as that’s when the industry’s mid-year numbers get released. So I’ll have more on that tomorrow afternoon. [Read on here...]

Our friends at Kino Lorber Studio Classics have just revealed that they’re going to be releasing Michel Gondry’s Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) on 4K Ultra HD sometime in 2021, licensed from Focus Features—a great sign that more deep catalog Focus titles may be coming to the format as well. Afternoon, folks! Today’s update is a quick one, but we’ve got a couple good things for you.

First, Tim and I have completed a review of Arrow’s new Flash Gordon: Limited Edition in 4K Ultra HD. The new 20th anniversary restoration (licensed from Studio Canal) is fantastic. I’ve never seen the film looking better.

Arrow’s release is a 2 disc set with Flash Gordon in 4K on one disc and the Life After Flash documentary on the other. Studio Canal’s UK release is more elaborate and I’ll be working on a review of that over the weekend, so watch for that here at The Bits on Monday.

Meanwhile, Warner has finally made Stanley Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket official for release on 4K Ultra HD and Digital on 9/22. As was the case with 2001: A Space Odyssey and The Shining, the film has been remastered in 4K from the original 35mm camera negative under the supervision of Kubrick’s longtime personal assistant, Leon Vitali. The presentation will include HDR10 high dynamic range along with the existing English 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack. [Read on here...]
