Criterion’s January slate includes Captain Blood, Kiss of the Spider Woman & Birth, plus more new announcements!

We’ve got three more new disc reviews for you today, including…

Tim’s look at Gary Sherman’s Raw Meat (aka Death Line) (1972) in 4K Ultra HD from Blue Underground.

And Stuart’s thoughts on Imprint’s Blu-ray double feature of Don Sharp’s The Thirty-Nine Steps (1978) and Anthony Page’s The Lady Vanishes (1979), as well as Charles Brabin’s The Beast of the City (1932) on Blu-ray from the Warner Archive Collection.

In announcement news today, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release Kogonada’s A Big Bold Beautiful Journey (2025) on Blu-ray and DVD on 12/23. The film stars Margot Robbie and Colin Farrell. [Read on here...]

MVD will release Ted Bafaloukos’ Rockers (1978) in 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray on 12/26.

Universal has set NBC’s Mike Gunton-produced documentary series The Americas (2025) for Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD release on 11/25. The series is narrated by Tom Hanks.

Magnolia Home Entertainment will release Amy Berg’s music documentary It’s Never Over, Jeff Buckley (2025) on Blu-ray on 1/6/26. They also have George Clooney’s Good Night and Good Luck: Live from Broadway coming to Blu-ray and DVD on 12/30.

88 Films will release Charles Band’s Crash & Burn (1990) in 4K Ultra HD on 12/26.

Samuel Goldwyn Films will release Alexandre de La Patellière and Matthieu Delaporte’s The Count of Monte Cristo (2024) in 4K Ultra HD on 11/11.

Severin Films will release Just Jaeckin’s Emmanuelle (1974) in 4K Ultra HD on 12/9. They’re also releasing a Saga Erotica: The Emmanuelle Collection 11-disc box set on Blu-ray that same day that includes Emmanuelle, Emmanuelle 2 (1975), Goodbye Emmanuelle (1977), and I, Emmanuelle (1969).

And of course the big news today is that Criterion has just announced their January 2026 slate of titles, which is set to include an upgrade of Jim Jarmusch’s Dead Man (1995) (Spine #919 – 4K + BD) on 1/6, an upgrade of Edward Yang’s Yi Yi (2000) (Spine #339 – 4K + BD) on 1/13, Martin Scorsese’s World Cinema Project No. 5 box set (Spine #1296 – Blu-ray), Michael Curtiz’s Captain Blood (1935) (Spine #1297 – 4K + BD, Blu-ray, and DVD), and John Huston’s The Dead (1987) (Spine #1295 – 4K + BD and Blu-ray) on 1/20, and Jonathan Glazer’s Birth (2004) (Spine #1298 – 4K + BD and Blu-ray) and Héctor Babenco’s Kiss of the Spider Woman (1985) (Spine #1299 – 4K + BD and Blu-ray) on 1/27. Of these, The Dead, Birth, and Kiss of the Spider Woman will all include Dolby Vision HDR. Criterion is also releasing a new Criterion Premieres title on Blu-ray and DVD on 1/20: Jia Zhangke’s Caught by the Tides (2024). You can learn more about them all here.
