The 4K + Blu-ray + Digital package—which is not a Steelbook this time—will be a 3-disc set. The movie discs will present the film at its proper 2.20:1 aspect ratio, beautifully restored by The Walt Disney Film Restoration team. The 4K will include audio in English Dolby Atmos and 2.0 Descriptive Audio, along with Spanish 5.1 Dolby Digital and French 5.1 DTS. The Blu-ray will include those and offer English 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio as well. Both will feature English SDH, Spanish, and French subtitles. [Editor’s Note: I have confirmed with Disney that this will be a 100GB disc, given the film’s length.]
Both film discs will include a Sing-Along option, as well as the original audio commentaries by Julie Andrews, Christopher Plummer, Charmian Carr, Dee Dee Wood, and Johannes von Trapp, as well as commentary by Robert Wise.
To this, a Blu-ray bonus disc will add The Sound of a City documentary, A City of Song, Musical Stages, Vintage Programs (including The Sound of Music, Rodgers and Hammerstein, location interviews, and audio interviews), Rare Treasures (Julie and Carol at Carnegie Hall: The Pratt Family Singers, The Julie Andrews Hour: Julie Andrews and Maria Von Trapp, Screen Tests, 40th Anniversary DVD Introduction by Julie Andrews, and galleries), and Publicity (Fox Movietone News: Academy Awards, trailers and teasers, TV spots, and radio spots). You can see the packaging above left and also here below (click the image or here to visit the Amazon pre-order page)…
Also today, Via Vision’s Imprint Films label has just announced another new 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray Hardbox edition for release on 11/26, and this one is a surprise: Ridley Scott’s G.I. Jane (1997)! That’s very interesting because here in the States it’s historically been a Disney (Hollywood Pictures) title, but internationally it was distributed by Largo Entertainment. The film has been restored from the original 35mm negative, will feature Dolby Vision HDR, and is limited to 1500 copies. It will include a 60-page book, the 1997 commentary by Scott, archival interviews with Scott, and actors Demi Moore, Viggo Mortensen, and Jason Beghe, The Making of G.I. Jane, additional interviews with the cast & crew, and B-roll footage, along with new interviews of director Ridley Scott, writer David Twohy, actor Jason Beghe, production designer Arthur Max, and editor Pietro Scalia. You can pre-order it here or by clicking on the image below…
Also today, XYZ Films has set Victor Danell’s Watch the Skies (2022 – original Swedish name UFO Sweden) for Blu-ray release on 9/23. You can watch either the original Swedish language version, or a new AI “visually dubbed” English version produced by Flawless.
StudioCanal has set a new 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray restoration of directors Alberto Cavalcanti, Charles Crichton, Basil Dearden, and Robert Hamer’s Ealing Studios “portmanteau” horror classic Dead of Night (1945) for release on 10/20 as part of its Vintage Classics line. Extensive extras will be included on the 2-disc set, which has been produced in honor of the film’s 80th anniversary.
And RLJE Films and Shudder will release Eli Craig’s Clown in a Cornfield (2025) on 4K Ultra HD Steelbook on 9/9.
Finally today, we have an update for you on Warner’s replacement program for the Superman: 5-Film Collection 4K box set from 2023. As many of you already know, all of the 4K discs in that set—save for Superman III—had various audio and video errors that have now been corrected for inclusion in the new Amazon-exclusive Steelbook reissue. (It appears that a wide reissue in regular packaging is coming before the end of the year as well, which will also include the corrected discs.) As I’ve reported here previously, if you have that 2023 set, you can request a set of the replacement discs by contacting This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. Include your shipping address and some kind of proof of purchase (an online order screen shot, a receipt photo, or a photo of the actual discs and packaging). In the meantime, here’s how to identify the new discs (at least in US editions):
Look for the tiny disc numbers on the edge of the printed disc label (the top artwork surface)...
- Superman: The Movie — error 4K: 2000145633, fixed 4K: 2000189852
- Superman II — error 4K: 2000180720, fixed 4K: 2000190426
- Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut — error 4K: 2000180870, fixed 4K: 2000190427
- Superman IV — error 4K: 2000180872, fixed 4K: 2000190428
I don’t know that replacement discs are shipping yet, but the new Amazon sets certainly are and they do have these new discs. When you contact that email address, be aware that you may or may not get an email reply. However, they should take your shipping info and send you the fixed discs when they’re available probably later this month. So please be patient, but persistent, and of course polite.
That’s all for now! Stay tuned…
