All right, folks—it’s now official! Paramount has finally announced the release of the Star Trek: The Next Generation films in 4K Ultra HD with a street date of 4/4 (right in time to celebrate “Star Trek Day” on 4/5) just as we first revealed here on The Digital Bits back in December. The news comes as always via the official StarTrek.com website.

You’ll be able to purchase the films in a Star Trek: The Next Generation – 4-Movie Collection box set, which includes all the films in 4K UHD and remastered Blu-ray in dual multi-disc Amaray cases with a cardboard slipcover, or 4K UHD + Blu-ray or Blu-ray singles, all with Digital Copy codes.

Again, both the 4K release and the accompanying Blu-ray are fully remastered. So these BDs should look leaps and bounds better than the previous 2009 Blu-rays. Note that the 4Ks will include both Dolby Vision and HDR10 high dynamic range, with audio in 7.1 Dolby TrueHD format. [Read on here...]

“With Star Trek: The Next Generation, Gene Roddenberry proved that you can do Star Trek without Kirk and Spock and McCoy, that the dream of humanity reaching for the stars could be shared in many different ways, with many different characters, telling many different stories. And I think that all of us who love Star Trek are so much richer for it.” — Michael Okuda, co-author of The Star Trek Encyclopedia

The Digital Bits and History, Legacy & Showmanship are pleased to present this retrospective commemorating the 30th anniversary of Star Trek: The Next Generation, the first in a string of live-action television follow-ups to Gene Roddenberry’s legendary 1960s science fiction series. All right, we have details for you on the extras you’ll find on Disney’s forthcoming Studio Ghibli titles, due on 2/3/15. Pom Poko will include original Japanese storyboards and trailers. Porco Rosso will include original Japanese storyboards and a trailer, an interview with Toshio Suzuki, and a Behind the Microphone featurette. Finally, Tales from Earthsea will include original Japanese storyboards, trailers, and TV spots, and 2 featurettes (Birth of the Film Soundtrack and Origins of Earthsea). I should note that I’ve also informed Disney of the problem with the subtitles on the recent Princess Mononoke Blu-ray (and that they should check to make sure a similar screw-up doesn’t happen on these three new titles). When and if they get back to me with word on what they plan to do about Mononoke, I’ll let you know.  [Read on here…]

First up today, a quick side note: Our own Tim Salmons has turned in a review of Criterion’s Judex on Blu-ray, a French crime film from 1963 that’s actually an homage to a 1916 silent film of the same name. It’s a gorgeous B&W classic from director Georges Franju. Don’t miss it.

Now then… I promised you guys a Star Trek TV on Blu-ray post.  [Read on here…]

We’re closing out the week with more new Blu-ray Disc reviews here at The Bits.

To start with, I’ve got my thoughts on CBS’ Star Trek: The Next Generation – The Best of Both Worlds Blu-ray for you today, to go along with yesterday’s review of Season Three.  Both titles street next Tuesday (4/30).  Also today, Jeff Kleist has a review of Jurassic Park 3D on Blu-ray 3D for you to check out.  And we’ve upgraded of pair of additional BD reviews by our own Tim Salmons from the original Bits website – Paramount’s Beverly Hills Cop and Sony’s Black Dynamite.

With that, we wish you all a fine weekend.  See you Monday!
