Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has just officially announced the 4K Ultra HD release of Julie Taymor’s Across the Universe on 1/9/18. The disc will include HDR10, Dolby Atmos audio, and the previous Blu-ray edition with all the previous special features. You can see the cover artwork at the left there.

Also on the 4K front, it’s beginning to look like Thor: Ragnarok will be Disney and Marvel’s next 4K Ultra HD release, due day and date with its Blu-ray and DVD counterparts in early 2018. We don’t have a street date yet, but a number of international retailers – including Zavvi – are already taking pre-orders on the title. We’ve updated our 4K Ultra HD Release List accordingly. Big news today, Bits readers! But first, some local business...

Our very own Tim Salmons has turned in a pair of new Blu-ray reviews, featuring Carl Reiner’s comedy classic The Man with Two Brains now available on disc from the Warner Archive, and also the ooky-gooey Italian terror of Joe D’Amato’s Beyond the Darkness from Severin Films. Do give them both a look. (But if you’re barf-sensitive, the latter might be a test of your constitution. FYI.)

Also here today, Russell Hammond has posted the weekly update of the Release Dates & Cover Artwork section, featuring all of the latest Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD cover art and Amazon.com pre-order links. As always, whenever you order literally anything from Amazon after clicking through one of our links, you’re helping to support our work here at The Bits and we really do appreciate it! All right, we promised more release news today, and more release news we’ve got for you...

Starting with this: Sony Pictures is releasing Steven Spielberg’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind on Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD on 9/19, in honor of the film’s 40th anniversary and fully-remastered in 4K. The film is also being re-released into theaters on 9/1. We don’t have details yet on any new extras (nor audio and HDR), but you can assume that all the previous Blu-ray extras will carry over. You can see the final cover artwork to the left and below, and both SKUs are now available for pre-order on Amazon.com by clicking here and here. There’s also a deluxe 4K/BD edition that includes a 64-page book and packaging that lights up and plays the film’s iconic theme.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will also release Jonathan Teplitzky’s Churchill on Blu-ray and DVD on 10/3. The film stars Brian Cox, Miranda Richardson, and John Slattery. [Read on here…]

All right, you fans have been waiting for this for a very long time, but I’m happy to report at long last that this is official folks. Space: 1999 – The Complete Second Series is now planned by Network Distributing for release on remastered Blu-ray and DVD in Q3 of 2015 (so about this time next year). Episodes will be HD remastered in the original 1.33:1 TV aspect ratio. There will be lots of special features. Further details will be available in the months ahead. Meanwhile, for fans that can’t wait that long, Network is taking a page from CBS and releasing the second series two-part episode The Bringers of Wonder as a Blu-ray special edition on 12/8 of this year. It will only be available via the networkonair.com website and is limited to just 1,999 copies. Preorders are on now. (Note that this is a Region B release, but we’re confirming whether it will be released here in the States and who the distributor is. Possibly Lionsgate. We’ll let you know.) Of those who purchase this Blu-ray, all will be entered in a special drawing to win one of three copies of The Complete Second Series when it’s finally released. [Read on here…]
