Godzilla (Double Feature)
Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah
Godzilla and Mothra: The Battle For Earth

1991/1992 (1998) - Columbia/Tristar Home Video (Toho Co., Ltd.)

review by Todd Doogan, special to The Digital Bits

Film Rating: B-
The new Godzilla has nothing on the old. Here we get to see some early 90s representations: Godzilla as superhero, with heavy MTV influence. Lots of quick cuts, Hype Williamsesque color lighting, and some pretty intense monster designs.

Disc Ratings (Video/Audio/Extras): C-/B-/D
The trailers look better than the movies do, and that's a damn shame. The full frame transfers don't do a bit of justice to these films. It's way to close-cropped, making it look zoomed in and claustrophobic. I didn't like it at all. The sound is fine, and the only extras are the trailers, which may not be a good thing considering they put the flick to shame.

Overall Rating: D
It's a nice gesture, but a wasted one.

Specs and Features

Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah (side A) 103 mins, Godzilla and Mothra: The Battle for Earth (side B) 102 mins, NR, both are full frame (1.33:1), dual-sided, singled-layered, Amaray keep case packaging, theatrical trailers, film-themed menu screens, scene access (28 chapters per side), languages: English (DD 2.0)

Bottom line

Godzilla die-hards are gonna snatch 'em up, but they will be disappointed. It's nice to see these hard to find titles, but it's such a waste of the DVD format.
