Before we get started today, I wanted to say a big word of congratulations to my fellow Team Axanar members and friends, who won the Geekie Award last night in L.A. for Best Short Film for Prelude to Axanar! You can read my Blu-ray review of the film here (it’s now available for just $35 via the link in the review). If you guys think Prelude is great, just wait until you see what we’re cooking up for the full Axanar feature film next year!

Now then... we’re closing out the week with one more Halloween Hangover Blu-ray review for you: Tim’s look at the AIP Version of Mario Bava’s Black Sabbath (1963) from Kino Lorber. And Tim’s got a great BD review coming on Monday too that just might get you Army of Darkness fans excited. So be sure to check back for it.  [Read on here…]

We’re kicking things off today with another new Blu-ray review. This one is a little unusual and should be more than a little interesting for Star Trek fans: It’s my look at Prelude to Axanar on Blu-ray, the 2014 proof-of-concept short film directed by Christian Gossett and produced by Alec Peters that launched the effort to produce the full Axanar feature film (to be directed by Robert Meyer Burnett and co-written by yours truly). Prelude to Axanar is now available on Blu-ray but ONLY as a perk for contributing $35 to the Axanar IndieGoGo campaign. You won’t find it in stores. But if you love Star Trek on Blu-ray, it’s definitely a title you’re going to want to add to your collections. Be sure to read the review to learn more about it.  [Read on here…]

All right, sorry about the lack of a daily column yesterday. A friend of Sarah and me had a family emergency and needed some help, so that took up a portion of the day on Sunday and Monday. In any case, I’m going to do a couple updates today to catch up.

First things first: Our own Michael Coate posted a new History, Legacy and Showmanship column yesterday, featuring a look back at Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas on the occasion of the film’s 25th anniversary. The column features a roundtable interview with film historians Robert Casillo, Leighton Grist, and Glenn Kenny. If you haven’t already checked it out, I think you’ll really enjoy it.  [Read on here…]

All right, sorry for the lack of an update yesterday. As it happens, I was up at bustling Ares Studios, where pre-production on the Axanar feature film is well underway. As some of you may know, I’m the co-writer of the film’s screenplay, so we were having script and production meetings, and then producer Alec Peters, director Robert Meyer Burnett and I recorded a podcast in which we discussed the script and the writing process, and then talked about what makes a great Star Trek film. That should be up in the next day or two, so I’ll be sure to post a link when you can all listen.

Anyway, the big news today is that Criterion has just announced their December slate of Blu-ray and DVD titles, which is set to include Michael Ritchie’s Downhill Racer (Spine #494 – Blu-ray and DVD) on 12/1, Ted Wilde’s Speedy (Spine #788 – Blu-ray, DVD and Hulu) and Takashi Murakami’s Jellyfish Eyes (Spine #787 – Blu-ray and DVD) on 12/8, and finally Howard Brookner’s Burroughs: The Movie (Spine #789 – Blu-ray and DVD) on 12/15. You can see the cover artwork below.  [Read on here…]

The big news today, without a doubt, is this: The Blu-ray Disc Association has just announced the completion of the technical specification for the Ultra HD Blu-ray format. Consumer electronics manufacturers will be able to license the spec in July, which should lead to the first players arriving in stores either just in time for the holidays this year or (more likely) in Q1 of 2016, with a big rollout at the Consumer Electronics Show in Vegas in January.  [Read on here…]

Are any of you guys Star Trek fans? Of course, you are! Well, we have something awesome to report for you today. I’m sure many of you are familiar with Prelude to Axanar – we’ve mentioned it here before. It’s a professionally-produced and original fan film, directed by Christian Gossett (of The Red Star fame) and set in the Star Trek universe. It’s sort of an in-world documentary production, as if produced by Memory Alpha and the Federation Historical Society, that looks back at the so-called Four Years War between the Klingons and the Federation. Remember: This is an entirely non-profit effort, completely funded by fans through Kickstarter. It was so successful that a full feature-length dramatic film called Axanar is now deep into pre-production that tells the actual story of that war. [Read on here…]
