There are unconfirmed reports that Warner is also working on The Polar Express, Gravity, and The Matrix. Additional titles I’ve personally seen 4K Ultra HD tests of (in private meetings at CES) include The Godfather and Lawrence of Arabia, but whether they’ve been fully mastered and authored for released yet is unconfirmed.

All right… today is the President’s Day holiday here in the States, but we do have a couple of announcements for you today...

First, if our retail, industry, and studio sources are correct, Disney and Lucasfilm are expected to announce the Blu-ray, DVD, 4K Ultra HD, and Digital release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi this week, possibly as soon as tomorrow. If and when that happens, we’ll have all the official details and cover artwork for you ASAP. [Read on here...]

This is just a quick update with news that the Criterion Collection has just announced its May Blu-ray slate…

Look for it to include Frank Borzage’s Moonrise (Cat #921 – Blu-ray and DVD) on 5/8, Aki Kaurismäki’s The Other Side of Hope (Cat #922 – Blu-ray and DVD) on 5/15, Christian Mungiu’s Graduation (Cat #924 – Blu-ray and DVD) and Beyond the Hills (Cat #923 – Blu-ray and DVD), and an upgrade of Paul Shrader’s Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters (Cat #432 – Blu-ray, DVD, and iTunes) on 5/22, and John Schleshinger’s Midnight Cowboy (Cat #925 – Blu-ray and DVD) and an upgrade of Robert Bresson’s Au Hasard Balthazar (Cat #297 – Blu-ray, DVD, iTunes) on 5/29.

We’ve updated our Criterion Spines Project page here at The Bits accordingly.

Stay tuned…

All right, we have another Blu-ray review for you today, and it’s a good one: Tim has checked out Criterion’s outstanding new Night of the Living Dead Blu-ray and he offers his thoughts on that in-depth today. You can find that here. And I’ll be checking in with another 4K Ultra HD review myself later today, so be sure to watch for it.

In announcement news today, Lionsgate has just set Greta Gerwig’s Best Picture-nominated film Ladybird for release on Blu-ray and DVD on 3/6. Extras will include audio commentary with Gerwig and cinematographer Sam Levy along with the Realizing Lady Bird featurette. You can see the cover artwork at left and it’s available for pre-order below.

Warner Archive just thrilled Batman fans with a Valentine’s Day tease that they’re working on a new Blu-ray edition of the animated Batman vs. Mr. Freeze: SubZero Blu-ray. We don’t have a street date yet, but it’ll be a very nice appetizer until Warner Archive releases they’re forthcoming Batman: The Animated Series Blu-ray set later this year. Our hats off to everyone at the Archive; they’re killing it with these releases. [Read on here…]

Tim has another couple of disc reviews for you today, starting with the Pulp: Special Edition on Blu-ray from Arrow Video and Beyond the Seventh Door on DVD from Severin Films and Intervision. Do give them a look.

In announcement news today, Universal has officially set Craig Gillespie’s twisted comedy I, Tonya for release on Blu-ray and DVD on 3/13, with the Digital release expected on 3/2. The film stars Margo Robbie and Allison Janney. It’s quite good.

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment will release the anime Batman Ninja on Blu-ray and DVD on 5/8. The BD will include English dubbed audio as well as the original Japanese audio with English subtitles. Strangely, there are also plans to release it in 4K but digitally only this summer, not on 4K UHD Blu-ray. That seems like a mistake to me, but I suppose that if the Blu-ray sells well the studio could reconsider. Extras will include 3 featurettes (East/West Batman, Batman: Made in Japan, and New York Comic Con Presents Batman Ninja). The Blu-ray will also be available in regular and Steelbook versions. We’ve got three more new reviews for you today from Tim, each well worth your time, including his thoughts on Shout! and Scream Factory’s A Quiet Place in the Country and Umbrella Entertainment’s region-free Silver Bullet on Blu-ray, as well as Shout!’s Mystery Science Theater 3000: Volume VIII box set on DVD. Do check them out.

FYI, I’ve been busy with server work these last couple weeks, but I’m diving back into disc reviews myself as well – on both Blu-ray and 4K – so watch for more of those starting tomorrow. [Read on here…]

“Horror movies are often overlooked or seen as being ‘less than’ other genres, but Suspiria truly is a work of art. Visually and sonically, it’s a beautiful piece of cinema.” — Vincent Pereira, Synapse Films’ Suspiria Blu-ray Original 4.0 LCRS Audio Supervisor/Producer

The Digital Bits and History, Legacy & Showmanship are pleased to present this retrospective commemorating the 40th anniversary of the release of Suspiria, Dario Argento’s influential “giallo” (Italian horror) film starring Jessica Harper, Stefania Casini and Flavio Bucci.

The acclaimed film, and first entry in Argento’s Three Mothers trilogy, recently turned forty, and for the occasion The Bits features a Q&A with Vincent Pereira, who discusses the film’s virtues and influence as well as his involvement with the recently issued Blu-ray release (reviewed here).
