Fox's Sunrise & Runner Runner, plus Disney/Lucasfilm set Star Wars: Ep. 7 date

by

Afternoon, everyone.  We should have that review of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey – Extended Edition for you tomorrow.  However, the Cliff’s Notes version (for those of you wanting to know if you should buy it or not) is that the A/V quality is excellent, the extended footage doesn’t really add up to much (though there are a couple of nice character-enhancing moments), but the 9-hours worth of documentary material is terrific and well worth buying the disc for all by itself if you’re a Rings or Hobbit fan.  [Read on here…]

Meanwhile, our own Tim Salmons has turned in a review of Richard Linklater’s Slacker, now available on Blu-ray from Criterion.

And Michael Coate has just posted a new History, Legacy & Showmanship column featuring a look back at the theatrical release of It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World on the occasion of the film’s 50th Anniversary, which is today.

Finally today, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has just announced that F.W. Murnau’s 1929 Best Picture-winning film Sunrise is coming to Blu-ray Disc on 1/14.  The disc will include both the Fox Movietone version and the European Silent version, commentary by John Bailey, outtakes with commentary, the trailer, the original Carl Mayer scenario, the original screenplay and restoration notes.

Fox has also set Runner Runner for Blu-ray and DVD release on 1/7, featuring deleted scenes and a behind-the-scenes featurette.

And in other news, Lucasfilm has just officially announced the theatrical release date for Star Wars: Episode VII.  It’s 12/18/2015.  Anyone want to be someone starts an official line party soon?

Here’s a look at the Blu-ray cover artwork for Sunrise, Runner Runner and The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey – Extended Edition
