It appears that the restoration work was done by Studio Canal through a company called Silver Salt in London, which makes us a little nervous based on their Terminator 2: Judgment Day 4K release (meaning Studio Canal’s, distributed by Lionsgate here in the States), but one can hope that actual film restoration experts were involved this time to ensure a high 4K image quality. We don’t yet have any official word yet of a Universal release here in the States, either in theaters or on disc [though we’ve reported that this title was coming to 4K for a while now], but stay tuned. Thanks to our old friend Simon Brew of the excellent UK website Den of Geek for the heads-up. You can watch the trailer for this restoration here:
While we’re talking about UK releases, Zavvi UK currently has an exclusive Blu-ray box set of the complete Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex anime series. It features all 52 episodes and 3 films on 11 Blu-rays in exclusive packaging with a 140-page book. You can see it here.
On the standard Blu-ray front, Shout! has just revealed the list of extras on their forthcoming John Carpenter Blu-rays, due on 7/24:
In the Mouth of Madness will include a new 4K scan, new audio commentary with director John Carpenter and producer Sandy King Carpenter, 4 new featurettes (Horror’s Hallowed Grounds, The Whisperer of the Dark, Greg Nicotero’s Things in the Basement, and Home Movies from Hobb’s End), the previous commentary with Carpenter and DP Gary B. Kibbe, a vintage “making of” featurette, the trailer, and TV spots.Memoirs of an Invisible Man includes a new 2K scan, the How to Become Invisible: The Dawn of Digital F/X featurette, vintage interviews with Carpenter, Chevy Chase, and Daryl Hannah, behind-the-scenes footage, outtakes, the trailer, and TV spots.
And Someone’s Watching Me will include a new 2K scan, a new audio commentary with author Amanda Reyes, 3 new featurettes (Adrienne Barbeau: Looking Back at Someone’s Watching Me, Carpenter’s Enforcer, and Horror’s Hallowed Grounds), the vintage John Carpenter: Director Rising featurette, a TV promo, and a still gallery.
Speaking of Shout! Factory, the company has also just revealed the extras that will be included on their Blu-ray release of Gravity Falls: The Complete Series, which is due on 7/24. You’ll get new audio commentaries with the cast and crew on all 40 episodes, the all-new One Crazy Summer documentary with the cast and crew (105 minutes), over an hour of never-before-seen deleted scenes, the all-new The Hirsch Twins featurette, the Disney XD Between the Pines finale special, the series’ interstitial shorts, promos, and more.
Also today, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment is releasing C.B. Strike: The Series on DVD on 9/25. It’s based on a crime novel by Robert Galbraith, which is a pseudonym of Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling. All 5 episodes of the Cinemax series will be included.
Finally, our own Tim Salmons has recorded a new episode of Talking Blu with our friends from Midnight’s Edge, and you can find that below. In this episode (part one of two), Tim and Tom talk about interesting Blu-ray collector’s edition releases from the many great indie labels – Arrow, Shout!, Kino Lorber and more. Enjoy!
All right, that’s all for now. Back late tomorrow. Stay tuned…
