Image Entertainment booth
The Image Entertainment booth (that's Garrett
Lee talking to Gary Reber on the right).

Image Entertainment's booth at VSDA features DTS audio and laserdisc product. As for DVD releases from DTS, I spoke with David DelGrosso at the Image party on Tuesday night. He tells me that a number of issues 'not under his control' have resulted in the delay, but that that situation will change soon enough. One need only look at the DVD manufacturers that DTS has lined up to support their surround sound format to know that they are gearing up for something big - both Toshiba and Sony will be releasing 3rd generation players capable of outputting the DTS bitstream. I'm told that, when software announcements are made and product starts hitting store shelves, any doubts about DTS on DVD will quickly disappear. At DelGrosso's invitation, I will be featuring DTS in a forthcoming Inside the Industry article here on the Bits. So be sure to stay tuned for more on DTS DVD.

Fox Lorber booth
Fox Lorber makes a nice showing at VSDA.

One of the most exciting discoveries I made at VSDA, is that Fox Lorber is preparing the widescreen DVD release of Akira Kurosawa's classic Ran, complete with trailer and filmographies! Those who have never seen Ran are in for a real treat. The film is a classic retelling of Shakespeare's King Lear, done in epic Japanese Samurai form, as only Kurosawa can deliver. Hollywood greats like Coppola, Spielberg and Lucas all have acknowledged the debt owed to Kurosawa, and if you've never seen one of his films before... there is simply no better film with which to familiarize yourself with his work.

Artisan booth
Artisan Home Entertainment (formerly Live) created excitement
over their upcoming releases of Merlin and Moby Dick to DVD.

There are some exciting DVDs coming from Artisan as well. Artisan's Mark Roche tells me, that as part of their reorganization and image remodeling (they were formerly Live Entertainment), Artisan recently acquired Halmark Entertainment's catalog. Which means that their highly-acclaimed TV miniseries Merlin will soon be released to DVD (in September)! Also coming to DVD from Artisan, are Patrick Stewart and Gregory Peck in the recent remake of Moby Dick! Suicide Kings (starring Christopher Walken) is also on the way to DVD.

There's lots more VSDA DVD coverage coming tomorrow! But in the meantime, here's another look at a few of the celebrities who graced the show floor today...!

Ernie Sabella
Ernie Sabella was a blast at the Buena Vista Booth,
signing autographs for The Lion King II: Simba's Pride.

Jerry Springer
Yep, that's TV talk show host Jerry Springer!
Word is his video is Too Hot for TV! ;-)

Tim Conway & Harvey Korman
Tim Conway and Harvey Korman were big crowd
pleasers, promoting Tim and Harvey in the Great Outdoors.

Irene Bedard
