This bootleg version also appears to have been mastered using
an Asian release of the special edition laserdisc. But it's got a
completely different set of trailers. It starts with one for a
company called "Look", although I doubt very much if Look
(whoever they are) had anything to do with this disc. Then we see
the Fox logo, followed by the Dolby Digital "Egypt" and
new THX laserdisc trailers, both in Dolby Digital 5.1 surround
sound. You then get the menu page you see below (at top), which is
animated - scenes from the film play in the background. Here's where
things get a little weird. The menu allows you to select two options
other than starting the film. The first plays a series of DTS
trailers, in 5.1 sound (but NOT DTS 5.1). You also get a
demonstration of Dolby Digital 5.1 audio, where you see a set of
speakers which "vibrate" individually on screen as sounds
move around the room.
As for the film itself, it's in letterboxed widescreen and
includes Chinese subtitles in white at the bottom (in the black
bar). However, there are NO chapter stops at all, so if you want to
watch a particular scene, you'll be scanning a LONG time. The audio
is Dolby Digital 5.1. The printing on the disc itself is nicer
looking, using artwork from the special edition release poster. It
claims that the disc is Region 6, but it's really got NO region
coding on it at all.
You can see screen shots from the disc below. Keep in mind that
when resizing them for the Internet, Photoshop tends to minimize
imperfections in the picture, so the images may make the video
quality seem better than it is. I would say that the quality here is
somewhat less than laserdisc (it is a copy, after all), but better
than VHS. |
