The 1st Annual Bitsy Awards!

The Digital Bits is proud to introduce you to The Bitsys - our very own online version of the Academy Awards for DVD! The Bitsys are our way of acknowledging the Best and Worst in DVD for 1999. We'll honor discs that we think are first-rate, and the studios and creative teams behind them. And we'll take a good-natured look at the dark side of DVD too, and point out a few discs that disappointed us. We'll even give you our take on some of the latest trends in DVD, and note some things we'd like to see on the format.

1999 saw an explosion in the amount and quality of DVD titles being produced, and choosing from among the many hundreds of discs that were released during the year wasn't easy. Only discs released (or re-released) in 1999 were eligible. Nominations for each category were made by Bits staffers Todd Doogan, Frank Ortiz and yours truly (Bill Hunt), and then the three of us put our heads together to make the final picks. Some of the categories were pretty tough to decide. But after a lot of careful deliberation, we think we've boiled it down pretty well. You may agree with us... or you may not. But hey - it's all in good fun.

We've broken the awards down into three pages for easier browsing as follows (just click on a link to take you to the page):

Until next year... keep spinning those discs!
