The 4th Annual Digital Bits Bitsy Awards!

Overture! Curtain! Lights! This is it... The 4th Annual Digital Bits Bitsy Awards, recognizing outstanding achievements in the field of excellence... er, I mean, DVD.

2002 was yet another phenomenal year for the format. But in 2002, it seemed that every silver cloud came with a gray lining. Some of the most eagerly anticipated titles yet were finally released on DVD... but the results were not always the home runs fans had hoped for. With the exceptions of the original (and we do mean "original") Star Wars trilogy and the adventures of a certain archeologist named Jones, most folks' DVD wish lists are becoming very esoteric and personal. But even though smaller, independent companies are doing their best to give us outstanding discs of cult classics, many of the major studios are rapidly losing interest in going the extra mile on their catalog titles. And just as high-end fans began to take heart in seeing the studios actively pursuing a new, high-definition DVD format... they just as easily lost faith as the pursuit disintegrated into splintered factions, each championing a different technology.

Of course, the big story in 2002 was "TVD"... the widespread proliferation of television series (old, new, foreign and domestic) on disc. But with a few notable exceptions, the studios still seem to regard TV as DVD's poor relation. Full season sets have become reasonably standard, but decent extras are still seriously lacking on many TVD releases.

Even so, there was plenty to cheer about in 2002, as you'll see in the following pages of awards. It was difficult to narrow the field, and we went back and forth in several key categories. But while some titles were immediate and obvious choices, we think you'll find plenty of surprises this year as well.

With that, we humbly present... Bitsys 4: Citizens on Patrol!
