Welcome,
one and all, to The Long Lost 3rd Annual
Bitsy Awards... The Digital
Bits' very own Oscar, Emmy and Golden Globe rolled up
into one. Every year, The Bitsys
recognize outstanding work in DVD. And every year, it gets harder
and harder to narrow down the field. The massive explosion in DVD's
popularity has resulted in some absolutely incredible work. 2001 was
no exception with our favorite format seeing... uh...
Okay, we're not fooling anybody here. Owning to that fact that we
could barely keep our servers in working order earlier this year,
when we normally post The Bitsys,
these awards are ridiculously, embarrassingly late. No question
about that. In fact, at this point we'd be willing to wager that the
vast majority of you assumed we'd simply forgotten about 'em. You
may even be wondering why we'd bother doing it at this late date.
Well, there are several good reasons for that. For starters, we
could scarcely call them the "annual" Bitsy
Awards if we skipped a year, now could we? Also, 2001
really was a banner year for DVD. Some of the most eagerly
anticipated titles of all time made their digital debut. With the
format really taking off, DVD producers felt free to experiment with
features and create several truly groundbreaking discs. And
besides... thanks to Stanley Kubrick, the year 2001 still sounds
futuristic, so it doesn't really feel like these are all that late.
We've made a few slight changes to the awards format this year.
Each category has no more than three winners (well... except for one
or two where we ended up with ties, weak-willed jellyfish that we
are). We truly want these awards to reflect the very best the format
has to offer, so while the selection process was extremely
difficult, each category ended up with a winner and two
runners-up... a gold, silver and bronze... a Moe, Curly and Larry (I
suppose the categories with ties have a Curly Joe or a Shemp, too).
Plus, we've brought in a brand new category: Best
Psychotronic DVD. With a nod to Michael Weldon for
coining the word in the first place, Best
Psychotronic DVD will honor excellence in the
presentation of cult cinema on disc.
Small changes aside, the idea remains the same. We'll take a look
at our favorites from 2001, as well as a few of our
not-so-favorites. So return with us now to those thrilling days of
yesteryear as we proudly present Bitsys
III: The Search For Spock!
P.S. - Our promise to you, the reader... The
4th Annual Bitsys will appear MUCH, much sooner than
these did. In fact, given that 2002 is almost over, they're
practically right around the corner at this point...
